Crystal

The Negotiation

Crystal is a longtime friend of Karen Wade and Gregory Davis, and her place between their histories makes her a crucial witness in Emily Wade’s search for her father. She first helped bring Gregory and Karen together; years later, she became one of the people who knew the truth about their separation and Emily’s parentage. Her silence protected Karen’s wishes, but it also prolonged Emily’s uncertainty, leaving Crystal both a keeper of the family secret and the person able to confirm it.

Identity and Early Connections

Crystal’s life intersects with Gregory’s before he meets Karen. When Gregory was ten, Crystal moved next door to him, and the two became good friends. Their friendship endured even after his father’s transfer took his family to San Francisco. When Gregory returned to Los Angeles at sixteen, he was reunited with Crystal, who introduced him to Karen. In Gregory’s account, Crystal is thus not a casual acquaintance but the shared friend through whom his first meeting with Karen becomes possible.

Crystal is also described as Karen’s best friend since high school. The two relationships give her unusual knowledge of the events Emily is trying to reconstruct: she knew Gregory before his romance with Karen and remained close to Karen afterward. The story does not provide a full account of Crystal’s own life, but these durable connections explain why Emily turns to her when she wants to learn about Gregory and why Crystal’s account can clarify what Gregory himself could not know.

Witness to Gregory and Karen’s Past

Gregory recalls that Crystal introduced him to Karen during the summer when he was sixteen. The introduction began a relationship that lasted three years. Gregory and Karen spent much of that summer together, saw each other almost every day, and discussed marriage, children, and a shared future. Karen imagined owning her own business; Gregory hoped to serve in the army. Their plans included a red-brick house, a white picket fence, and a springer spaniel named Dooley. Crystal’s role in their meeting places her at the opening of a future that seemed carefully imagined before it was broken apart.

After Gregory enlisted, he left expecting that he and Karen would build that life together. He says that when he returned to California after the war, he learned that Karen’s mother had died and that Karen had moved away. Gregory searched for her for a year but could not locate her. Crystal was then studying abroad in Paris. According to Gregory, he wrote to her, and she replied that she had lost touch with Karen and did not know where she had gone. Emily later challenges that account: she says Crystal was present when she was born, making Crystal’s reported lack of knowledge difficult to reconcile with what Emily understands about her history.

The Secret About Emily’s Father

When Emily calls Crystal to ask about Gregory, she recognizes that Crystal may know more than she has said. Crystal is startled by the call and plans to come the following week so they can talk. Emily reads her reaction as a sign that Crystal knows something, and the planned conversation becomes part of Emily’s effort to resolve the question of her parentage.

In a later conversation, Emily asks Crystal directly whether Gregory is her father. Crystal answers yes. The confirmation turns an unresolved suspicion into a fact and establishes that Crystal had knowledge of the truth while Emily was growing up. She explains that Karen asked her to keep Gregory’s identity from Emily because Karen considered that part of her life over and did not want to speak about him. Crystal’s disclosure therefore reveals both Emily’s parentage and the reason the information had been withheld: her silence was bound to a request from her closest friend.

Loyalty, Concealment, and Consequences

Crystal explains the emotional history behind Karen’s decision without portraying it as simple indifference. Karen had told Gregory she was pregnant before he left, but he still chose to pursue his military ambitions. Karen experienced his departure as abandonment. According to Crystal, the heartbreak was so severe that Karen convinced herself other men would leave too, and she feared that a new attachment could expose Emily to the same kind of loss. Karen wanted to start over somewhere new and raise her daughter without Gregory; she also believed that if Emily knew the truth, she would seek him out, although Karen felt he did not deserve to know her.

Crystal says that Karen’s decision was intended to protect Emily as well as herself, while acknowledging that she did not agree with it. Her explanation makes the concealment an act of loyalty rather than evidence that she lacked concern for Emily, but it does not erase the cost of that loyalty: Emily had to ask directly to learn who her father was and why her mother had hidden him. The evidence establishes Crystal’s eventual confirmation and explanation, not how Emily and Crystal’s relationship develops afterward. Her significance lies in that precise, complicated position: she helped create the connection between Gregory and Karen, was later asked to obscure its consequences, and finally supplied Emily with the truth that the family’s silence had kept from her.
